Precision-Expanded Foils

The electrically active material compromising the electrodes of most modern battery designs are powders and require a mechanical support structure to hold them in place during the manufacturing process. This support structure also functions as a current collector and provides the electrical connection point for the external circuit.

Applications

  • Battery Current Collector
  • Battery Support Stucture
Advantages
  • Dexmet provides the widest range of alloys, geometries and widths available in the industry. Dexmet stocks the most common alloys and thicknesses, which cuts lead times dramatically.
  • Dexmet can provide customers with custom slitting, blanking, heat treating and edge treatment options. Please contact our Sales Department for details.
  • Dexmet’s precision expansion process ensures high reproducibility leading to more consistent battery production and lower cost of quality.
Features
  • Mesh Size Starting at 0.001”
  • Base Material Thickness Down to 0.001”
  • 8000+ Openings/inch²
  • Widths to 48"

Common Materials

Stainless Steel, Nickel, Aluminum, and Copper. Lesser used material include Silver and Titanium. Dexmet has the capability to expand all ductile metals. Common Materials

Design Considerations

  • Resistivity: Each material contains numerous specifications that allow for specific resistivity requirements. Out sales and engineering staff can help you tailor these parameters to meet the requirements set forth in your specific battery.

  • Surface Area: Greater surface area is used when seeking optimal adhesion and packing.

  • Open Area: Greater open area can be achieved to meet both weight and conductivity requirements for your specific battery.

  • Weight: With a variety of materials and thicknesses, Dexmet expanded mesh can be conformed to fit precise weight requirements.

  • Overall Thickness:Controlling overall metal thickness can greatly effect both weight and process-ability without fracturing or breaking.

  • Metal Type: Dexmet Corporation can expand any ductile metal. Our engineers can assist you in choosing the most appropriate metal to meet conductivity requirements for your battery.

  • Battery Life: While some materials (like titanium) provide for a battery with uncontested lifespan properties, the additional price prohibits this material from being used in many competitive markets. Materials such as nickel and aluminum can provide long battery life spans without high price difficulties.
