In 2009, three researchers, Dimas Smith from the Universidad Francisco de Miranda, Carlos Graciano and Gabriela Martinez from the Universidad Simon Bolivar published a paper that discuss the use of expanded metal in engineering applications. While some of the applications discussed were widely known, we appreciated the fact that the paper highlighted the advancements made by the use of expanded metal in applications from several different market sectors.

In fact this is the abstract from the paper below:

Abstract: Expanded metal has been widely used around the world. This paper is aimed at presenting latest advances in the use of expanded metal in engineering. Currently, expanded metal is mainly used in the construction industry as furniture, fences or protection purposes. Hundreds of patents can be found in the literature regarding possible applications for expanded metal. These applications fall into four main areas: furniture, construction, biomechanics, and energy absorption systems. When expanding the metal, the material undergoes slits and stretching modifying the mechanical properties of the base metal, hence enhancing the material strength. Additionally, there is a reduction of the weight per unit of area, which is an asset when designing lightweight structures. Waste material from the manufacturing process is almost none, since the base metal is cut and stretched to the final form. Recently, expanded metal sheets are used in architecture to create modern, efficient and elegant buildings that are also energy-efficient, open and transparent. The relevant patents on expanded metals are discussed.

The paper, “Recent Patents on Expanded Metal” list 38 known applications where expanded metal is used. Therefore it is obvious that the applications that can be developed using expanded metal are voluminous. Of course Dexmet has spent considerable effort in the development and fabricating of expanded metal. Expanded metals are incorporated into applications in the following industries, automotive, aerospace, railway, cathodic protection, advanced batteries, fuel cells, solar, filtration, chemical processing, food processing and the building industry, just to name a few.

We thank these researchers for their hard work and hopefully their paper will help scientist, engineers and designers alike understand the value of using expanded metal in their applications.
