Common materials that Dexmet expands include Stainless Steel, Nickel, Aluminum, and Copper. Lesser used materials include Silver and Titanium. Dexmet has the capability to expand all ductile metals.
The electrically active material comprising the electrodes of most modern battery designs are powders, slurries and laminates and require a mechanical support structure to hold them in place during the manufacturing process. This support structure also functions as a current collector and provides the electrical connection point for the external circuit.
Each material contains numerous specifications that allow for specific resistivity requirements. Our sales and engineering staff can help tailor these parameters to meet the requirements set forth in your specific battery.
Greater surface area is used when seeking optimal adhesion and packing.
Greater open area can be achieved to meet both weight and conductivity requirements for your specific battery.
With a variety of materials and thicknesses, Dexmet expanded mesh can be conformed to fit precise weight requirements.
Controlling overall metal thickness can greatly effect both weight and process-ability without fracturing or breaking.
Dexmet Corporation can expand any ductile metal. Our engineers can assist you in selecting the most appropriate metal to meet conductivity requirements for your battery.
While some materials (like Titanium) provide for a battery with uncontested lifespan properties, the additional price prohibits this material from being used in many competitive markets. Materials such as Nickel and Aluminum can provide long battery life spans without high price difficulties.
Dexmet has been providing expanded metal for anode and cathode production for many decades. While most designs are proprietary, the battery chemistry generally determines the alloy used, while the active material composition determines the optimum mesh geometry. Dexmet engineers can help tailor your product in regard to the proper flattening and heat treatment to make your production line run smoothly. For specific questions on battery design and general manufacturing processes, Dexmet recommends that battery engineers consult The Handbook of Batteries by David Linden & Thomas Reddy (McGraw-Hill Handbook series). It is available from Amazon.com in new (~$150) or used editions.
